Slot Machine Payout Percentage
One of the first things that you will likely want to know before wagering any money playing online slot machines is how each machine calculates its payouts. It can be almost impossible to give any definite information on the payout that you can expect to receive as many factors go into determining the exact mathematics. Unfortunately, one of the primary factors in considering slot payouts is luck.
However, there are parameters that software engineers and casinos set in place with which you can become familiar. This article explains all that you need to know about slot payouts and winning percentages.
Slot Payout Percentages
When you log on to your favorite slot website or research a potential favorite, you will likely see the payout percentage proudly displayed for each machine and for the overall website. Most of the websites boast payout percentages above 97%. These percentages are set when the software is created. An online casino might order a slot game with a 95% payout percentage and the software creator will adjust the odds until that percentage is achieved. So, if you play a 95% slot machine with $100, you will never come out more than $5.00 behind right?
Well, no. It is very important to understand that payout percentages are always determined over a very long period of time. The percentage is correct but it can be deceiving. For example:
You play a 5 reel slot machine with $10.00 and lose all but $1.00. On the surface, you could conclude that the payout percentage for the machine was 10%.
The next person plays the same 5 reel slot with $10.00 and wins $100.00. By the same logic, they could conclude that the payout percentage for that machine was 1000%.
However, both logical conclusions are incorrect in determining the true payout percentage for any one particular game. There may be as many as 10 million different sessions used to determine a payout percentage. Any one session cannot be an influential factor. The software developer will have run their program with fake money millions of times to calculate the payout percentage. Logically, you would have to do the same to expect the same payout percentage.
Slot Payout Differences
On most slot machines, the allowable bet amounts will determine the payouts. In other words, the payout on a penny slot machine will be much less than a nickel, quarter or dollar machine. To keep players gambling, you can assume the following rule about denomination payout differences between slot machines:
Higher bet slot machines will have a higher payout percentage than lower bet slot machines. For example, a dollar slot machine will often have as much as double the payout percentage of a penny slot machine.
This does not mean that you will necessarily make more money every time by playing dollar slots in favor of penny slots. However, it does mean that the payouts will be much larger than the penny machine. Higher payout percentages can be deceiving. Slots operate on almost complete luck. The higher the payout percentage, the more likely it is that the testing to conclude this percentage was done over a longer period of time. Keep your bets small and watch your budget and you will always come out ahead, so to speak.
